Flashback Friday.... A Frolic through Scrapbooking the last ten years.

Ten years ago the art of scrapbooking was at it's height, crafting designers Becky Higgins, Ali Edwards,  Jessica Sprague  and Lisa Bearnson were celebrities of the paper crafting world, Creating Keepsakes was THE paper crafting magazine and there was a local scrapbook store or two in towns across the country... Then came the crash of 08... from the housing market to the stock market, and then slowly scrapbook stores began to close, then the magazines started to disappear, then there were less and less crops to go to.... then it seemed as if the whole art of scrapbooking sort of fizzled out of existence. I even lost my crafty mojo in spite of finally having the craft room of my dreams. The friends that I used to crop with, well, we all went our separate ways.....

The 'Scrapbook Sorority'.... Barb, Thelma, Sonda, and myself...

Fast forward ten years.... planners and traveler's notebooks are the hottest new items at CHA... well even CHA's  show name has changed to Creativation. Scrapbooking has new styles with Becky Higgins popular Project Life which introduced the craze of pocket pages, to Heidi Swapp's easy and innovative StoryLine collection. Crops have been replaced by Meet-Ups and Facebook groups. There are a few brick and mortar locally owned scrapbook stores, the ones that survived such as Beverly's Unique Scrapbooking in Sacramento, CA and Whimsodoodle in St. Petersburg, FL,  and the ones that sprung right up like a fresh and fun daisy like Dixon, California's It's All About the Scrapbook. Whimsodoodle survived by evolving, and is now the creative destination for such crafting designers like Amy Tangerine (she even designed a stamp set for the store event), and mixed media phenom Dyan Reaveley, as well as stocking their shelves with likes of  Kate Spade planners and the latest and greatest paper crafting and mixed media supplies. Beverly's Unique Scrapbooking is still around because of loyalty, staying true to the art of scrapbooking, and great service. Nestled in an art deco styled strip shopping center in the Land Park, Beverly's is a treasure trove full of the tried and true scrapbooking classic, as well as some of the new. Beverly, the owner, is a gentle soul with a passion for scrapbooking and her crafting community. She holds a very popular ladies night crop every Friday night that as of late has been very full.

Traveling down the Sacramento Valley and heading West you find California's newest addition of local scrapbook stores, It's All About the Scrapbook... well it's not just the title, it's their store. Andrea Kett and Yvonne Lynhares have brought their passion for paper crafting to the quiet valley town of Dixon, California. They have just been open since 2013! Yes, just five years. These two maverick crafters banded together and defied the odds to open their store and they have been a huge hit with paper crafters all over the Central Valley of Calfornia  by offering amazing classes in mixed media, planner meet ups with Planner Con CEO and founder Louise Umeki, as well as offering a First Friday and Third Saturday crops.

Slowly but surely the art of scrapbooking is making a comeback. Through the innovation and amazing designs of industry sweethearts Heidi Swapp and Amy Tangerine who not only design but inspire others on a daily basis, memory keeping has evolved from just 'scrapbooking' to being a way of life. Documenting life, the every day. As for the paper crafting community and magazines, well, my neighbor (well up HWY 50 just a few short minutes) Andrea Grey the Retrohipmama is not only teaming with good friend Alyssa Duncan to bring the crafting world 'Hey Crafty Babes' podcasts, but she's setting the paper crafting world on FIRE with an amazing new magazine... yes, this hip and amazing woman has created her own magazine which not only features new paper crafting ideas, but celebrates her love of all things retro. You can order her debut issue at www.retrohipshop.com, which also stocks her own design of art journal kits, and temporary tattoos that are ADORBS.

As for Altered Whimseys, I'm in the process of planning a HUGE rebranding with the blog and the direction I want to take with my passion for paper crafting. I'll give you a little tease, it's fun, pink, sassy and wears a tiara.... and she's not a princess or a queen.....
