Sacred Spaces.... Part II.... What goes in your Sacred Space

Last week we started a journey to find a sacred space. On this past Sunday I posted a small list of items you might want to have handy, or know where to find them, when creating your sacred space. Today we are going to explore on how to create your sacred space. If you haven't found your space yet, don't panic, this is not a race, there are no deadlines, just bookmark these posts to return to when you are ready.

First of all, how was your day? Most of you are tired after a long workweek following the end of the holidays. Some of you are just starting your workweek. SAHM's are relieved that the kids have returned to school (you know you are...) and they have some time to themselves... at least for the six to eight hours they are in school. For me, well, as I am a happy house frau, I am looking forward to a relaxing weekend with my husband. Thank you again to all of you who have begun this journey with me, and thank you even more to those who have shared this online journey so that others may find their own sacred space.

Take this time now to just de-clutter your head, let go of the stress of the day and relax with a nice cup of herbal tea, perhaps light a scented candle... and find some peaceful background sounds to get you in the creative/building frame of mind. Right now I am listening to the Liquid Mind Station on Amazon Music. If you are a Prime subscriber, this music service is awesome. Anyhow... don't want to stray too far.... Now that your head is in a good place, the distractions have been silenced, it's time to focus on you, and what you want in your space....

What you want to put in your space is determined on how you want to use that space. For prayer and study? For meditation? For prayer? For yoga or mindful movement? Or just to escape the reality that is your life....   How you want to use your space will determine what you might want or need for your space.

In the list that I posted on Sunday one of the first things I had on it was an altar cloth for your altar. If you are using your space for prayer, sacred rituals, or meditation you may want to have an altar. An altar is defined as a table or flat-topped block used as the focus for a religious ritual, especially for making sacrifices or offerings to a deity. No...no sacrificial chickens or goats here... unless that's your thing, then go for it, then may I suggest a mop and bucket for your room as well.

We all come from different spiritual backgrounds, one's definition and idea of an altar may differ, and that's okay. I'm just going to give some basic ideas of what you might want or need. On your altar you might want to have a special cover or cloth. This is something you can make for yourself, or find something in your home that is special to you. Like a small table runner someone made for you (I am using one that was made by a dear friend of mine on my table), or table cloth that you already have. Re-purpose.

Another item you might want to have is a candle, or candles. It's all a matter of what you want to do in your room. My space is dedicated to prayer and Christian study, I have one candle I light when I pray. In the practice of Wicca and the Pagan rituals three candles on your altar represent the God, Goddess and All. You may not want a whole lot of candles in your space if it is small... kind of presents a fire hazard, and you don't want that. If lighting a flame in your sacred space is an issue, there are a plethora of electric flameless candles on the market.

For those of you who would like to use their room for a meditative and holistic ritual approach may want to purchase an essential oil diffuser and oils to go with it. Oils by DoTerra and KIS are high quality. I do not recommend purchasing your essential oils at a mega-mart with a mega-mart brand on them. DoTerr and KIS are holistically certified 100%, and DoTerra uses natural sourcing practices. (No, I am not a DoTerra rep, I've just done my homework.).  I have found that diffusing lavender oil helps ease tension, and peppermint added helps boost my spirit. Find what works for you. Addressing the whole spectrum of essential oils is a whole other blog post on it's own... just Google it and discover what works for you. You can either use your oils with the diffuser, or without.

These are the three basic items to have for building your space. The rest, depending on how you want to use your space, is up to you. For study you would have your books of scripture and notebooks, along with some nice pens to write with. For a prayer room you might want to have a place to post your prayers, either a cork board, or a prayer jar if you would like to keep them out of view. Those are just the basics.

In the next few days, drop me a line, let me know what you think about this series, let me know if there is more that you would like to know about, more to include. I'm all ears... theduchessofsassytown@gmail.com. I hope you enjoyed this, and next Friday we are going to explore the various uses for sacred spaces....
